Eating Disorders
Eating disorder is a state when eating behavior of a person becomes abnormal. Either the person eats very less or much more than what is required. There may be a variety of reasons, responsible for the situation, be it psychological, emotional or any other reason.
A person having low esteem, anxiety, or feeling of being rejected, is more prone to the problem. On a general basis, eating disorders have been classified into three categories; Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge eating or Compulsive Eating.
When a person eats lesser than what he/she should, to maintain a healthy body weight, the situation is known as Anorexia Nervosa. Growing popularity of skinny models, further fueled by weight loss products’ manufacturers, people, especially young girls become eager and desperate to shed even that last centimeter of extra fat (extra as per them) . To achieve the same skinny figure, they eat less and exercise a lot. Slowly and gradually, they become finicky about their body shape and food intake. This habit of not consuming a balanced diet results into various other complications, which may be fatal in some cases.
Another type of eating disorder is when a person eats compulsively, but because of being conscious of body weight and figure, he/she throws out the eaten material either by self induced vomiting or with the help of laxatives. Over a period of time, they get trapped into a vicious cycle of over eating and purging. This eating disorder is better known as Bulimia Nervosa. Because these people are also weight conscious, they indulge into excessive exercise to compensate their over eating, which may further cause other disorders.
Sometimes, people due to feeling of depression or loneliness, use eating as a weapon to overcome their problem. These people keep eating something or the other throughout the day. As a result, besides being overweight, they become victims of other physical and psychological problems like guilt and shame, because of their unshapely body and a continuous feel of hunger.
After having known the above discussed facts, one thing is for sure that eating disorder is not a disease in itself. It is a symptom of some other underlying problem. Eating disorder can be completely cured if the root cause of the problem is identified and taken care of.
